Ambassador commission calculator

Enter your average order, your margin and what your ambassadors sell. See what a commission costs per sale and per month, what is left, and the most you can pay before the program loses money.

This tool is in labs: it works, and we are still testing it. What it makes is yours to keep.

What is left of a sale after the cost of the product itself.

A percent of the order, or an amount per sale, as chosen above.

Tools, team time, or a monthly fee you pay on top of commission.

What should be left of each order after commission and fixed costs.

How it works

A commission pays an ambassador for each sale they bring in, as a share of the order or as a flat amount. Set it too low and ambassadors lose interest; set it above your margin and every sale they bring in costs you money.

This calculator shows what a commission costs you per sale and per month, how much of each order is left afterwards, the highest commission that still breaks even once your fixed costs are covered, and the commission that keeps the margin you want.

Which data it uses

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Fluencify; we only count that the tool was used.

Every formula is shown next to its answer, so you can check the arithmetic or repeat it in a spreadsheet. It does not suggest a rate: what ambassadors expect varies, and we have no data of our own to set one. It shows what your rate costs and where it stops paying.

Step by step

  1. Pick your currency and enter your average order value and gross margin.
  2. Choose whether the commission is a percent of the order or a flat amount per sale, and enter it.
  3. Enter the sales per ambassador each month, how many ambassadors you have, and any fixed monthly cost of running the program.
  4. Add the margin you want to keep, if you have a target, and press Work out commission.

Example

A percentage commission checked against a target, in made-up numbers (not a suggested rate)

What goes in

Average order and margin
80 in your currency, 50% gross margin (made up)
Commission
15% of the order
Sales
4 per ambassador each month, 25 ambassadors
Fixed cost and target
500 a month; keep a 30% margin

What comes out

  • Commission per sale: 15% of 80 = 12. Left per sale: 40 gross profit - 12 = 28, which is 35.0% of the order.
  • Each month: 4 x 25 = 100 sales, 1,200 paid out, and 28 x 100 - 500 = 2,300 left.
  • Highest commission that breaks even: 40 - 5 fixed cost per sale = 35, which is 43.8% of the order.
  • To keep a 30% margin: 80 x (50% - 30%) - 5 = 11 per sale, 13.8% of the order, so 15% is above the target.

Questions

Should a commission be a percentage or a flat amount?

A percentage grows with the order, so it rewards ambassadors who bring in bigger orders and costs you more on them. A flat amount is easier to explain and keeps the cost of a sale fixed. Try both here and compare what is left per sale.

What is the highest commission I can pay?

The gross profit on a sale, less your fixed costs spread over the month's sales. At that commission each sale covers its share of the costs and nothing more; above it, the program loses money.

Can I pay a fee and a commission?

Yes. Add the monthly fees to the fixed monthly cost, and the calculator shows how much of each sale is left once both are paid.

Does the calculator suggest a commission rate?

No. What ambassadors expect varies by niche and by program, and we have no data of our own to set a rate. It shows what your rate costs and where it stops making money, so you can choose one on purpose.
