Usage rights fee calculator

Set your own percentage of your fee for each place a brand wants to use your video, and for how long. See the usage fee, the total with your video fee, and how a buyout compares.

This tool is in labs: it works, and we are still testing it. What it makes is yours to keep.

What you charge for making the video, before any usage.

Fluencify has no data on usage rights fees, so every percentage here is yours to set: the form starts empty on purpose. This is arithmetic, not legal advice.

How it works

Usage rights are a brand's permission to use your video beyond what you post yourself: on its own accounts, in paid ads, on its website. You own what you make, and a license says where, and for how long, the brand may use it. More places and more time are worth more, which is why usage is usually priced on top of the video.

A common way to price it is a share of your video fee for each month of use, with paid ads priced higher than organic posts because an ad reaches people who do not follow the brand. This calculator does that arithmetic with percentages you choose, one per channel, and compares it with a one-off buyout if you price one.

Which data it uses

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to Fluencify; we only count that the tool was used.

Fluencify publishes no data on usage rights fees, and we found no public source that sets a standard percentage we could cite. So the calculator suggests none: every percentage is yours, and every formula is shown next to its answer.

The only Fluencify figure in the result is context: what campaigns paid creators per 1,000 views, with its sample size and month. It is for a video's views, says nothing about usage and never enters the calculation.

What the page says about who owns a video comes from the U.S. Copyright Office and GOV.UK, linked under Sources. Copyright law differs between countries.

The published ranges

Fluencify publishes what brands paid creators per 1,000 views once a month, as ranges with the sample size and the month beside every number, and only when at least 7 brands and 20 creators are behind a range. The first month is on its way.

Until it is published, this tool shows no range and says so, rather than a number from anywhere else. How the ranges are made is on the UGC rates page.

Step by step

  1. Enter your fee for the video and how many months the brand wants to use it.
  2. For each channel the brand wants, enter your own percentage of your fee per month. Leave the others empty.
  3. If the brand wants to use the video with no end date, add your buyout as a percentage of your fee.
  4. Press Price the usage. Each channel is your fee times its percentage times the months, and a table shows the same percentages over 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.

Example

The arithmetic, with made-up numbers (not a suggested rate)

What goes in

Your fee for the video
100 in your currency (made up, to keep the arithmetic simple)
How long
3 months
Paid ads
10% of your fee per month (made up to show the arithmetic: Fluencify suggests no percentage)
Organic posts and other channels
left empty

What comes out

  • Paid ads from the brand's own accounts: 100 x 10% x 3 months = 30.
  • Usage fee: 30 for 3 months, 10 a month. With the video: 100 + 30 = 130.
  • To paste into your reply: paid ads from the brand's own accounts, for 3 months from the first post, for 30 on top of the 100 video fee.

Questions

What are usage rights in UGC?

Permission for a brand to use your video in places you name, such as its own accounts, paid ads or its website, for a set time. You keep ownership, and the brand gets a license on the terms you agree.

How much should I charge for usage rights?

There is no standard rate we can point to, and Fluencify has no data on it, so the calculator does not suggest one. A common structure is a percentage of your video fee for each month of use, higher for paid ads than for organic posts. Decide your own percentages, and use the table to see what they add up to over different terms.

Why price paid ads apart from organic posts?

An organic post shows the video to the brand's own followers. An ad puts it in front of people who do not follow the brand, for as long as the brand pays to run it. That is more use of your work, so it is usually priced on its own.

Should I offer a buyout?

A buyout lets the brand use the video with no end date for a one-off fee. It gives the brand the most, so price it that way. The calculator shows the month from which your monthly license would cost more than your buyout, which helps you set one that makes sense.

Do I own the videos I make for a brand?

Usually, unless your contract says otherwise. The U.S. Copyright Office says that once you create an original work and fix it, you are the author and the owner, and GOV.UK says copyright protection is automatic. A contract can transfer it, so read yours. This is not legal advice.
